Immigration Minister brings “sunny days”

Immigration Minister brings “sunny days” to Vancouver. The keynote speaker at this years’ CBA National Immigration Law Conference, held last weekend in Vancouver, was Immigration Minister John McCallum. Unlike in previous years, the Minister drew several rounds of applause from the 500+ crowd as he spoke of upcoming changes to immigration laws and policies.

One lawyer in the crowd even told the Minister he was happy to see that the change in government had brought about “sunny days” to the immigration world. While Minister McCallum could not offer definitive dates for some of these changes, he has promised to repeal the harmful Conditional Permanent Residence law, repeal some of the changes to the Citizenship requirements, and to reverse the age of dependents back to the age of 22. These are changes that are largely welcome by the immigration community.

Whatever changes lie ahead, many of us are looking forward to ongoing and continued dialogue with the Minister around how to make Canada’s immigration system even better. It is nice to see that there are rays of hope on the horizon.
