Canadian citizenship may be gained as of a right (e.g., if one of your parents is a Canadian citizen) or an application for Canadian citizenship can be made if certain criteria are met.

If a person’s citizenship is gained as of a right, that person can apply for a Citizenship Certificate as proof of that Canadian citizenship.

To make an application to become a Canadian citizen, most applicants must:

  • be a permanent resident;
  • have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years;
  • have filed taxes (if required);
  • prove language skills in English or French; and
  • pass a citizenship test

If there are issues as to absences from Canada, a person may be asked to complete a Residence Questionnaire as part of their citizenship application.

If a citizenship application is successful, the applicant will be invited to take the Canadian Oath of Citizenship at a citizenship ceremony.
