Deadline fast approaching for expressions of interest under the new Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship application process

The application process for the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) recently changed for the 2017 application cycle.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence are now required to first complete an online form to indicate their interest. The online form is available from January 3, 2017 until February 2, 2017.

After this 30-day period, IRCC will randomly invite 10,000 individuals to apply to the PGP. Candidates who are invited to apply will have 90 days to submit a complete application and all supporting documents.

IRCC has indicated that these changes were implemented as part of the government’s commitment to fairness and to improve people’s access to the application process. The previous process involved a “first come, first served” application process. This led to a rush to submit applications on the first day the program reopened, with the result of applicants paying higher courier fees in an attempt to secure a spot.
